Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house close to the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female got detained at the location and a third person who ran away after the explosion was found not long after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the property was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander informed reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the detonation had taken place on a floor above the doorway and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to Italian media, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
