Mr Comey's attorney filed the answer on his behalf in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for various causes including that his the accused, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was formally accused soon after the former president pressured his top legal official to take action against him.

Judicial Process

In court on mid-week, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald advised the judge they intended to file several motions to throw out the case before a court case, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was wrongfully appointed to handle the proceedings.

James Comey's proceedings was first managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under pressure from Trump after his examination into another opponent - the New York official - did not succeed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

James Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and making jokes. He was joined by his wife, Mrs Failor and daughter his daughter, a US lawyer who the Trump administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the court recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was asked if he understood the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the proceedings.

Background Context

The former director was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into Donald Trump's first term as national leader. At the time, he was overseeing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey sparked a counter-response from liberal politicians when he announced just days before the national vote that he was probing Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors claim Mr Comey lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the Senate by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to release to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

In a video James Comey shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and accused the former president of conducting himself like a "tyrant".

"Our household have been aware for considerable time that there are consequences to opposing Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after Donald Trump posted on online platforms insisting on his top legal official, Pam Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
