The nation’s food inspection agency stated it aims to begin a total removal of hundreds of these large birds at a ranch after the country’s top court declined to stop the contentious eradication.

Legal Impediments Removed by Supreme Court Decision

The recent judicial decision removed all legal impediment to beginning the culling.

Universal Ostrich Farms, located close to the town of Edgewood, was first ordered in May to eradicate almost four hundred birds, amid fears of an outbreak of H5N1 avian flu.

Recently, authorities took over of the operation.

Sixty-nine ostriches have already died after the outbreak of a flu-like illness.

On Wednesday, Canada’s supreme court granted an interim stay on the cull order as it weighed whether to hear the case.

Political and Public Responses

The escalating dispute over the ostriches – and a lingering post-pandemic skepticism – have motivated protesters to descend on the property, with many expressing their anger on social media.

The situation has also entered Canada’s federal politics.

In early October, the Conservative leader, the Tory leader, was asked repeatedly by journalists whether he supported the demonstrators.

The Conservative figure has avoided making specific comments on the issue, even though many within his political group protesting against the slaughter.

He informed reporters the issue had been poorly handled from the start but avoided mentioning the word the bird’s name.

Cross-Border Involvement and Proposals

A number of prominent individuals from the US have petitioned Canadian officials.

The US health secretary proposed to move the ostriches to his ranch in the Sunshine State.

An US wealthy businessman has also appealed with the Canadian government to rescind its cull order.

Scientific and Ethical Debates

The Canadian federal government stated the relevant agency was following a “stamping out” approach in order to limit the spread of avian flu, a move consistent with wider advice from international health bodies.

However, animal advocacy groups have urged the authority to conduct additional tests on the birds to confirm they are infected.

The farm owners claimed that because the most recent fatality occurred on January 15th, with the surviving majority seeming in good condition or healed, the flock has acquired at least partial herd immunity against H5N1.

They have also cast doubt on the extent and effectiveness of the tests on the ostriches.

Ranch Representative Reaction

Recently, the ranch representative, informed the press that the authority was “murdering” healthy birds.

“These are ancient creatures that have survived millions of years, but they will not survive the government agency,” she stated.

A co-owner said he was concerned that there is no fairness left”.

Court and Authority Decisions

A national court, on the other hand, found that permitting the birds to remain alive could result in the spread of bird flu to different species, the livestock sector – or to people.

The agency has not announced when it expects to start culling the ostriches.

Eradication Procedures

An older agency manual, acquired under freedom of information laws, states ostriches can be euthanized by different means, the preferred being injection, which needs multiple individuals: one person to restrain the ostrich by sitting on its back, another to secure the head, and one to inject the drug.

Personnel can also use gas chambers or break the birds’ necks.

Employees of the agency can only shoot the ostriches “as a last resort”, if they have a trained shooter on the premises.

As per media sources, soon after the judicial decision, agency workers began setting up additional gear and flood lighting around a large hay-bale enclosure near the rear of the ostrich pen.
