Pat Bamford Joins Sheffield United Despite Leading Abusive Chants Targeting Coach Wilder
Patrick Bamford has joined Sheffield United only seven months after leading derogatory taunts targeting the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
This experienced striker, a free agent after departing from Leeds, has agreed to a deal with the Championship club in difficulty until January. His lengthy time at Elland Road was ended amicably in August.
One of Bamford’s last memorable actions as a Leeds player was to lead abusive chants about Wilder amid the club’s promotion party in April. Now, the former England player is set to play under Wilder as the Blades’ manager aims to rescue the team he loves away from the bottom places.
Previous History Between the Striker and Wilder
Both men had a past prior to Leeds won promotion back to the top flight last season and United were defeated in the promotion decider by Sunderland. The manager described Bamford as a "muppet" back when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and Sheffield United secured direct promotion while Leeds United fell short in the playoffs.
Making Amends and Looking Ahead
Everything seems has been put behind them with Sheffield United, the league's lowest scorers, urgently requiring of a boost up front while Bamford looking to rejuvenate his career.
The Wilder chant went viral this spring. An apologetic Patrick and the Leeds manager, Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the following day.
Chris Wilder commented at the time: “Spoke with Pat recently and I’ve no problem at all with it. I'm uncertain regarding the language from a fellow pro! But I appreciated and admired him calling me.
“We spent 20 minutes and similarly I talked with Daniel Farke too and had a half-hour chat with him and he is a great person, a class act. Back in my playing days we used to give it and take it and that is part and parcel of the game at every level, even on Sunday league. I've got no problem at all. I am cool with the situation and I told him that to Patrick.”
Latest Playing Challenges
Bamford featured in 18 games with Leeds United last season however the former Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Middlesbrough player has struggled with fitness issues over the past few seasons.
