The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.
Influences and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, having been shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
