The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Ashes Team
England have chosen a twelve-player selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several past matches.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to provide some spin while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
However McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
